Welcome to Taurus season!

The astrological movements of May 2022 continue to be exciting; other than being the start of Retrograde season (prior to this, we had a good 2 months of no retrograding planets in the sky), we are also seeing major energetic shifts such as the ingress of Jupiter into Aries and the start of eclipse season (we just had one on the 30th April and now we are heading to another on the 16th of this month). Change is definitely in the air.

Let’s zero in on that one thing that we’re all familiar, with but dread at the same time: Mercury Retrograde.

What? Mercury retrograde again?!

Alas, Mercury retrograde is back and we’re already deep in its shadow by now. This Mercury retrograde will begin on the 10th of May ‘22, for those of us living on this sunny island, and retrograde through May into early June. You can expect its effects to be completely weaned off only from 19th of June.

Let’s dive in and take a look at what exactly Mercury retrograde is.

Mercury retrograde, defined.

Mercury retrograde, in short, is the appearance of the planet Mercury moving backwards rather than its usual forward motion. It is an optical illusion created by a faster moving planet (Mercury), moving past a slower moving planet (Earth). As Mercury moves past Earth in its orbit, it produces the illusion of retrograde movement - hence, Mercury retrograde.

Astrologically speaking, what tends to happen during this period is a breakdown in communication, flow of information and expression of ideas. Because Mercury governs anything connective in nature, it can also indicate breakdown in electronic devices - since we use them as a means of connection; or even in the way we commute (which connects us from one place to another).

What can I expect from this Mercury retrograde period?

Before we go there, I’d like to emphasise that while Mercury retrograde presents an inconvenience, it isn’t always a bad thing. Its effects on you really depend on where it’s happening in your natal chart, what planets it’s triggering and whether they are within the range of degrees which the retrograde is affecting. Do consult an astrologer (me!) if you want to dive deeper into understanding the impact on yourself.

Otherwise, this Mercury Retrograde will happen through the signs of Taurus and Gemini.

Mercury Retrograde in Taurus

Who it will affect: anyone with planets in fixed signs such as Taurus, Scorpio, Aquarius, Leo

With Mercury Retrograde happening in the sign of practical and stable Taurus, the themes for communication breakdown could be linked to money, resources and possession. Perhaps there’s a re-evaluation and rethinking of what you value. Perhaps what you once thought of as stable and unchanging is showing its impermanence and you might be deliberating over what’s a practical step forward. Perhaps, what was the usual and the norm is revealing itself to be archaic and you’re deciding how you could revise it.

Because Taurus demands you to go slow and get practical, this should be how you are engaging in your decision-making process.

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini

Who it will affect: anyone with planets in mutable signs such as Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces, Virgo

Gemini is thematically about language, relevance, and the logical mind. If you are affected by its retrograde, you can definitely expect breakdowns in the way things are coordinated- perhaps a misunderstanding over the words used or a delay of certain information and data. It’s also possible that your thoughts and ideas just don’t connect as well as you’d like them to or you’ll have problems articulating their relevance.

Other than being flexible, those affected must be prepared to re-examine the available information rather than jumping to conclusions.

Take Charge This Mercury Retrograde

However Mercury retrograde may affect your chart, the underlying principles that can guide you for this period are the same: check, reevaluate, tie-up loose ends and don’t resist the problem. Most importantly, don’t blame the retrograde- take ownership of the situation and work with it.

For more information on how you can engage with a Mercury retrograde, you can see this nifty guide which I published here.

Mercury Retrograde is also a great time to journal. Here are some prompts for you!

Journaling Prompts

  1. What’s on my mind at the moment? Why are they on my mind?
  2. How are things not going in the way that I want? If it does go the way that I want, what would that look like?
  3. What are some issues in my life that need to be reassessed or reevaluated?
  4. In what way am I stubborn, unchanging and uncompromising? How is that serving and not serving me?
  5. If there’s one thing I need to readjust and change, what would that be?
