Join us for an afternoon of books, beer and a recital of classical music songs with repertoire inspired by celebrated 19th-century German authors and poets. Alongside Books & Beer's classic book swap, award-winning musicians, mezzo-soprano Jade Tan Shi Yu and pianist Churen Li, will perform Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe (“A Poet’s Love) and Kreisleriana (Kreisler’s Tales), amidst recitations of book excerpts.

Churen Li (Piano): Churen Li has won top prizes at international and national piano competitions. In 2015, she performed as soloist in a tour of Macau and Hong Kong with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Orchestra as part of Singapore’s 50th jubilee celebrations of independence, and also as a President’s Young Performer with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2013. She is passionate about new music, having experimented increasingly with combining musical genres, as well as reconsidering performance practices in the programming of her concerts. Praised for her "extraordinary skill" in the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), and the "epitome of poise and polish" in The Straits Times (Singapore) well as "a pianist who gives new spirit and breath of life to [her] bewitching performances" in the Ragusa Times (Sicily), she has been invited to perform recitals and chamber music at international festivals such as the Norfolk Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival and the International Summer Academy Music Festival. She holds degrees from Cambridge University, Yale University and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory.

Jade Tan Shi You (Mezzo-Soprano): Jade Tan Shi Yu was the Grand-prize winner of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music’s Concerto Competition 2016 and Best Singaporean Artist in the Singapore Lyric Opera’s ASEAN Vocal Competition 2016. She was also honored with the title of President’s Young Performer in 2016. Jade graduated from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music as Valedictorian with First Class Honours and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in the Hannover Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien, Germany. Jade is passionate about spreading interest in arts and classical music in Singapore. She was the founder of Classical Conversations, an initiative aimed at spreading interest in classical music, and is the main organiser of the first Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Alumni Festival 2018, the Voyage Festival. In 2019, she also worked in production in Berlin with the Berliner Festspiele, organising the new music festival MaerzMusik. Jade is currently President of the Singapore Students’ Association Germany, and a Li Siong Tay Scholarship recipient from the Tan Kah Kee Foundation.

Together, Jade and Churen seek to re-imagine classical music in a contemporary and relevant context by experimenting with new formats of staging, in order to break perceived barriers to entry of classical music.
