Located two hours away from Jakarta is the mountainous town of Cisarua, a haven for refugees escaping war and conflict in the Middle East. The town has always served as a transit point for refugees hoping to reach Australia by sea, but the Australian government has been turning away refugee boats since 2013. Over 14,100 refugees and asylum seekers are now caught in limbo with no place to go, and no means with which to journey home.
In commemoration of #RefugeeAwarenessWeek, we're pleased to welcome journalists Prabhu Silvam and Kenneth Lee, along with residents of the Cisarua refugee committee (who will be Skypeing in directly from Indonesia) to The Moon. Join us on the evening of Friday 21st June for a fund-raising dialogue session where Prabhu and Kenneth will share their personal experiences running the #RefugeesofCisarua initiative, and discuss the power of storytelling as a means of social advocacy.
Tickets are $10 each and all proceeds will go directly to the refugee community in Cisarua.
8pm to 8.30pm: Sharing session with Prabhu and Kenneth
8.30pm: Skype session with refugee families currently residing in Cisarua, Indonesia
9pm to 9.30pm: Q&A Session
